Partner at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer

About Me

Boris joined the firm’s Berlin office as a trainee in 1997, and became a partner in 2004. He is known for advising employers in complex restructurings, and also integrating companies and their employees after M&A transactions. He has handled cases stretching across the whole range of industries and sectors, and has broad experience in advising German, foreign and international companies on compliance issues such as internal investigations, data protection and codes of ethics.

Much of his work involves sensitive issues affecting his clients’ long-term relationships with their employees and trade unions, and the implications for their reputation in the media. Clients appreciate his skill, delicacy, and awareness of these wider aspects of their interests, as well as his specific legal knowledge.

His priority is always to see that the objective of the case is achieved, while ensuring that reputational damage is avoided and that the various parties involved are able to work together in the future.

He is able to offer international and foreign clients (particularly those based in the US or the UK) detailed advice on Germany’s robust laws on employee data protection and privacy, and how these may affect proposals to transfer data across jurisdictions. This often enables them to adopt strategies and working practices which mean that problems can be avoided before they arise.

He is the co-author of an authoritative commentary on German labour law - Arbeitsrecht Kommentar, 6th edition, 2014.

Boris is currently the head of our German-speaking EPB practice group.
